BAR SIDEBOARD

FURNITURE DESIGN

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
JANUARY - MARCH 2021

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The prompt for this project was creating a piece of furniture inspired by contemporary designers. My design needed to resemble her collection, yet stand out as a unique piece.

Choosing to emulate Kate Duncan, my bar sideboard uses her Brutalist twist on a classic furniture piece.

This was my first finished furniture product built during my degree. It still holds up as one of my favourite built projects.
DESIGN PROCESS
Kate Duncan’s work is recognizable by a few key characteristics. Many of her pieces use repeated columns intersecting with large pedestals of stained wood. Her work resembles traditional home furniture pieces, but its understated and smooth finish gives it a contemporary look.

The bar sideboard has storage functionality, a display space, and a surface to work on. The otherwise simple design is ornamented in the center by two gold semicircle drawer pulls.
